Atem Sherlyn, a Journalism graduate shares the story of how she joined Buea Institute of Technology as a wannabe webmaster. Inspired by the rapidly changing world around her, she tells of how the journey seemed almost impossible at first but she held fast and now she is proud to be one of the best developers in her class. Atem Sherlyn flaunts her newfound skills including but not limited to PHP, JavaScript MySQL, HTML, and CSS.

If I’m to describe my journey so far at the Buea Institute of Technology I would say it’s magic. When I came in it was I didn’t know anything about coding or how to build websites but right now I can code a website I can use WordPress to build my website. My name is Atem Sherlyn I’m from the University of Buea I studied International mass communication I’m a graduate and I came to BIT to study webmaster.
When I came into BIT I had no prior knowledge of coding or webmaster. I came in as blank as possible. In the course of my program where I’ve studied several computer languages like PHP HTML CSS JavaScript database and many more. What actually attracted me to the field of technology is the drive to know more. When you see things everywhere around you now is technology. Wherever you see it, and mostly when people talk, they talk about technology and if you’re not inside that field you cannot believe them. So I really needed to be inside that field to be able to experience it and to be able to help others and in that process also earn something for myself.
Speaking about challenges that I faced my first day in school that’s why I came late I came late to the students beginning of the school year so it was difficult for me to catch up with the rest of the class but I thank God and I thank the school because they have great lecturers who took me through every step of the way. I remember my first class was databases. When I got into the class everybody was writing codes and I saw everybody’s laptop it was codes that I did not understand I was so upset because, first of all, I’m the kind of student if I don’t understand something I’m angry. So for a moment, I left the class I went outside and stood for like five minutes thinking about my life. I was like, what kind of decisions have I made getting into a field that I don’t understand anything?
So after a while after thinking for a short while I was like,.. go back to my seat. I was just looking at the teacher I was writing down everything that he was saying even though I wasn’t understanding anything that was happening. Fortunately for me, he actually noticed that I wasn’t getting anything so he walked up to me sat down beside me and started teaching me step by step. So with that, it helped me a lot to grow into the kind of person or the level that I am today.
