The Government suspends admissions to health expert training programs in higher education institutions in Cameroon. This means that universities in Cameroon will no longer be allowed to admit students for nursing, midwifery, medical laboratory technician, pharmacy, and other related programs till further notice.
Yaoundé, Cameroon – In a major move to streamline and standardize the training of health experts in the country, the Cameroonian government has announced several key changes to the higher education landscape.
Effective immediately, admission for the 2024/2025 academic year for HND/BTS programs in Medical and Biomedical Science options has been temporarily suspended at MINESUP (Ministry of Higher Education) institutions. However, this suspension does not affect current students (moving to L200 and L300) who will be allowed to complete their studies, following the existing training curricula for paramedical institutions in Cameroon and one-year top-up degree programs, which will remain open for admission.
To address this evolving situation, experts from both the MINSANTE (Ministry of Public Health) and MINESUP meet in their first joint working session on August 19th with the primary objective of charting the way forward and exploring the possibility of developing a new, common curriculum for all MINSANTE and MINESUP training institutions.
Another key resolution is the introduction of a national examination for HND/BTS/HPD/DSEP graduates, to be organized by the Cameroon National Council for Paramedical Personnel in October 2024. This exam will serve as a prerequisite for obtaining a license to practice in the medical field, which is in line with international standards.
